Katy Perry got in the Halloween spirit early for her performance on The X Factor last night. Donning an orange, tiger-printed miniskirt, the singer belted out her hit single off Prism, “Roar,” as dancers mimed the daily 9-to-5 trudge. Tiger ears poked through her dark waves, but that were just icing on the saturated cake.
Perry is gearing up to officially release her third LP this week. If you haven’t heard it yet, stop what you’re doing and read. It’s a glittering fantasy of an album that sounds like your favorite Disney princess story come to life. The departure from her sugar-coated pop is subtle; if not more aggressive in its delivery (as this outfit boldly suggests). While the content in her new material is darker, her look is still unabashedly Katy Perry: tongue-in-cheek but sincere.
Enough with the leaks already! Katy Perry’s Prism is streaming in all of its full, deluxe edition glory right now!
Like we’ve said before, Perry has definitely matured in her sound with her latest. She’s experimenting and making even the saddest of stories danceable (read: “Love Me”). We’ve known she’s been dabbling in new genres, but the flow of the album isn’t hampered. It’s dark; it’s light; it’s pop; it’s feel-good music — something we’d like to call ear candy. She and her producers have taken traditional pop formulas and tweaked them just enough to put her sound in a league of its own, while still being true to the genre. It’s an album that will make it difficult for even the most ardent of non-Perry fans to turn off.
