The producers of the longtime PBS children’s television show ‘Sesame Street’ have reportedly decided to pull an upcoming segment featuring pop singer Katy Perry.
Video of the segment, in which Perry sings a children’s version of her hit song ‘H๏τ N Cold’ to Elmo, was posted on YouTube this week and was scheduled to air in the November 3rd episode. (After getting 1,293,230 views, the video was pulled from YouTube on Thursday morning.)
TMZ reported on Wednesday that the producers decided to pull the song after fielding dozens of complaints from parents about Perry’s revealing outfit.
The Boston Herald’s Lauren Beckham Falcone asks, “I’m no prude, but since when is ‘Sesame Street’ brought to us by the letters T and A?”
But others in the media fail to see what all the fuss is about.
On NBC’s ‘Today’ show on Thursday, host Matt Lauer said, “So apparently what some people are upset about is perhaps the outfit Katy Perry is wearing with this iconic children’s television character Elmo, with the cleavage and things like that. I’ve gone completely wishy-washy on this. My first reaction was maybe it’s not right, and the more I look at it, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”
The NY Post’s Jarett Wieselman adds, “You’d think that parents would have more to do than complain about something as benign as this, but I guess giving the impression you’re taking care of your kids more often than not trumps actually taking care of your kids.”
What do you think? Is Katy Perry’s outfit inappropriate for a television show aimed at young kids?
