Breaking up is hard to do, especially in front of a TV audience, so Katy Perry has decided not to attend the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday after all.
The singer–who is nominated for seven awards, more than any other celebrity–had planned to attend the show despite her husband Russell Brand’s divorce filing late last month. But then last night she shared her change of plans on Twitter, telling her KatyCats: “Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People’s Choice Awards. I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed!”
It all did seem a little soon. Katy has been dabbling in acting a little more lately, and did a bang of job hosting Saturday Night Live last month (especially playing Pippa Middleton), but it’s pretty hard to look happy in front of millions of people when you’re not. To be honest, I’d hide out as long as I could if I were her. Visit spas, get massages, hang out with my nearest and dearest (hey, Rihanna, get over here stat…and bring ice cream!) and just not deal with anything major. Come award show night, I’d be watching on my couch in my pjs, instead of getting zipped into a vibrant latex costume…that may or may not shoot food out of brasserie.
So the People’s Choice Awards will be a little less interesting now. And we’ll hear more of the line, “Katy Perry is unable to be here tonight. Let us accept this award on her behalf.” But I think this is for the best. She needs time to figure out her next step. Why rush it?
